Companies That Aren’t Mobile Accessible, Are Not In For The Long Haul

As most of us know, mobile technology is the future. Yes, the desktop computer will still have a place in our society (at least for the foreseeable future), but soon enough if a device doesn’t have the ability to become mobile, it will be become obsolete. In fact, recent studies show that by 2013, over 50% of the cell phones being sold will be smart phones. Obviously, flip phones are still mobile, but with such limited capability, you mine as well be using a desktop computer.

For companies that are trying to stay in the public’s eye, this means that they have to develop sites that are mobile ready. We’ve all been there before, where we want to view our favorite site but because we’re on a smart phone, the site doesn’t load properly. This is the easiest way for businesses to lose consumers and they are well aware of that. In order to prepare for this massive influx of smart phone users, many companies such as McDonalds, Papa John’s, and Target (to name only a small few) are enabling their sites to be mobile accessible.

In fact, not only will these businesses need to market to a mobile audience, but they will need to be able to sell to a mobile audience. Anyone who has bought theatre tickets or downloaded an album to their phone while driving to the theatre or a friend’s house knows exactly how important this is. Accessibility and ease are the new currency for consumers. Not that they weren’t before, but with everything designed to be done on the go and in an instant, if you are a company that requires your customers to go their desktop in order to conduct business with you, don’t be surprised if they don’t want to conduct business with you for very long.

It will surely be interesting to see how these companies respond to this challenge. After all, having easy to navigate web pages from your mobile device is a sign to consumers of how professional you are. You may have a foothold on a certain market corner, but if your mobile web page doesn’t do what it is supposed to do, consumers will absolutely see this as a company that doesn’t know how to take care of the details.
